From what I hear, the Tom Waits LPs scheduled, "Closing Time", "Nighthawks At the Diner", "The Heart Of Saturday Night" and "Small Change" have been temporarily (lets hope) canceled. So that fall gift we were all anticipating won't be delivered. The release of the Black Crowes triple set "Croweology" has been bumped to August 31st so far. Enough for the bad news.
Here are the new releases scheduled for this Tuesday the 3rd of August. "The Suburbs" a double from Arcade Fire, David Dondereo's ""# Zero With A Bullet", a self titled LP from El Ten Eleven, "Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3" by EL-P, the Gravehill LP "Rites Of The Pentagram / Metal Of Death" that was due earlier, "JJ No 2" by JJ, Lady Gaga's "The Remix", "Consentual Selections" from Mad Caddies, a regular double edition and a deluxe (180 gram / 4 LP / 45 RPM) version of Metallica's "Reload", "Where The Messengers Meet" by Mt. That's the highlights for it this coming week.

To those of us who stocked and enjoyed the releases by Classic Records it was a sad day when they called it quits and turned their remaining inventory over to Acoustic Sounds for distribution. They will be painfully missed as they were a one of a kind label bringing inspiration through a very dim era in new vinyl collecting. It looks like MoFi is the game in town. Thankfully they will be there to help fill the void. Don't you guys go anywhere. Now on to the releases for next week.
Due to the Memorial Day weekend there is slim pickings for next Tuesdays releases but here goes. A double from Jeff Beck titled "Performing This Week...Live At Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club", the new Jack Johnson on Universal called "To The Sea", "Tough" a two record set from John Mayall, the vinyl reissue of "Unplugged In New York" by Nirvana, "Live From Texas" the new double ZZ Top LP, a six , yes six LP anthology from Lamb Of God called "Hourglass" and an EP by Trap Them titled "Filth Rations".

Here goes for the rest of the releases. Ah, Record Store Day. Thanks to all the people who stop by to say Hi and picked up some of the titles. The two most requested titles were The Hold Steady and the Beastie Boys. The Flaming Lips was a close third. The Springsteen 10" was also more popular than I would have thought. The weekend turned out to be a huge success. Many people came in Sunday to see what was still around for sale. The Beatles single of "Paperback Writer / Rain" didn't make it for RSD but look for that to be released on May 18th. It comes complete with the original UK picture sleeve.
The highlights of this coming weeks releases are as follows. "Fever" a double from Bullet For My Valentine,a reissue of "Billion Dollar Babies" by Alice Cooper, Gogol Bordello's "Trans-Continental Hustle", "All This Time" by Heartless Bastards, a reissue of The Mahavishnu Orchestra LP "Birds Of Fire" on 180 gram , "Live In New York City" by Mono, another in the DJ Kicks series this time it's Juan MacLean, "Save Yourself" by Make Up, the Jesse Malin and the St. Marks Social LP "Love It To Life", "Deep Tissue" from People Up North and lastly "Palomino" on 180 gram from Trampled by Turtles. Next weeks releases pale in comparison to what we will see for "Record Store Day". We have had phone calls galore asking what we will have and if we are participation. Of course we are participating and we won't know exactly what we will be getting until that day. It makes it all the more exciting, don't you agree? It will be fun to see how many people call expecting things held. They will be oh so disappointed as I have checked into it and no store will be holding anything. First come, first served. It is after all "Record Store Day" not "Records Store Phone Day".
Tuesday the 20th's releases are so limited that we won't be going through them. It seems the labels put most things out on RSD the 17th. I look forward to seeing you all Saturday. Next time....... |

For the Record
Well, Record Store Day is fast approaching and unfortunately there is one of the same potential problems looming overhead. Quantity. Not that there is a lack of titles. At last count there were over 175 different titles being put out. 12"s, 10"s, 7"s and CDs. Full lengths, EPs and Singles. Picture Discs, Colored Vinyl and plain old Black Vinyl. Ah, what a wonder. There just seems to be that one hitch. With how much will each store end up. Nationally there are 2500 copies of this 600 of that 3500 of another and so on. For this obvious reason stores will have to limit each customer to one copy of anything so that there are as many people happy as possible. I know from last year that the e-bayers were out in force attempting to buy every copy of certain artists. I recommend to anybody interested that they get out early. Every store will be allocated quantities according to their orders. I highly doubt anyone will have copies of everything. So far the hotter titles seem to be the Flaming Lips, the Hold Steady, the Black Keys, the Sonic Youth and the Wilco judging from inquiries. There are always a surprise or two. As I said last year, wouldn't it be great if everybody got one shot to put in there guaranteed order and that was what was pressed. Vinyl is sold one way only so the stores would be happier, the customers would be happier and the labels would come away clean. Enough on that for now. Make sure you get out to your local independent record store on April 17th to see what they have to offer. We look forward to having a good crowd here at Cheapo Records. Hope to see you.
This coming weeks new releases are as follows. "Amerykah Part Two;Return Of The Ankh" from Erykah Badu, Four Braid titles "Frankie Welfare Boy Age Five" a double, "Movie Music Vol One" and "Vol Two" also doubles and "The Age Octeen", "Rainwater" by Citizen Cope, a double LP from Coheed and Cambria "Year Of The Black Rainbow", "Thank You Mr. Churchill" by Peter Frampton, Freelance Whales "Weathervanes", "The Storyteller" from Clutchy Hopkins, a two LP set titled "Congratulations" by MGMT, Rafters' "Animal Feelings" and very ex J Geils singer Peter Wolf's "Midnight Souvenirs". I've got nothing but good responses about the newest Pavement reissues. No complaints about sound problems. Nothing bad. There have been many comments about the reasonable pricing though. Many.
Here are the planned releases for Tuesday March 23rd. Domino is releasing "Coconut" from Archie Bronson Outfit, The Bamboos have a double lp "4', two Black Sabbath reissues "Black Sabbath" and "Master of Reality", "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" a double set from Brand New, Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova team up with "One Jug Of Wine, Two Vessels", a 10th anniversary edition of "The Sickness" by Disturbed, "What A Beautiful Place" from Katherine Howe, The Living Sisters lp "Love to Live", "Two Thousand And Ten Injuries" from Love Is All, "Ugly Side Of Love" by Malakai, Northstars' tribute to Haley Mills with "Pollyanna", a double from Owen Pallett titled "Heartland", "No. 2: Abyss in B Minor" from Serena-Maneesh, a new She And Him called "Volume Two", one from The Weakerthans titled "Live At The Burton Cummings Theatre" and lastly a picture disc from White Wizzard called "Over The Top". Metal bands and their picture discs. What can you do. I've found most people tend to shy away from picture discs. Just ask Slayer.

Well the big release this week is definitely the new White Stripes lp "Under the Great White North". It is available in two formats regular and a deluxe version. As I have been told the deluxe version, in a quantity of less than 1000 pieces, will be pretty hard to find as the distributor has been shorted. The good word is that the regular edition is a $24.99 list.
Speaking of affordable list prices, you have to love those new Hendrix reissues and stop the world the new Neil Young record "Dreamin' Man Live '92" also has a $24.99 list. Really! Neil Young! Affordable to those blue collar workers about which he sings!
As for the rest of the releases here we go. There are two releases from Dirty Three "Oceans Songs" and "Whatever You Love, You Are", two Doors releases "Absolutely Live" and "Live in New York", "Live on Lansdowne, Boston, Ma" from Dropkick Murphys, a new Ludacris titled "Battle of the Sexes", "Ghost" by One For the Team, "Imaginary Television" from Graham Parker and a new Yes lp called "Nylon Curtain".

First off I've got to mention how nice it is to see not one but two hip hop titles being released on vinyl this week. Both the Ludacris lp "Battle of the Sexes" and Redman's "Reggie Noble Nine and a Half" are due so maybe there is some hope for more hip hop vinyl in the future.
This is also a week of catalog reissues starting with the much talked about Hendrix titles. There are five and they are "Are You Experienced?", "Axis : Bold As Love", "Electric Ladyland", "First Rays of the New Rising Sun".and "Valleys of Neptune" which is 12 unreleased recordings. Matador is releasing four Pavement titles Tuesday the 9th . They are "Brighten the Corners", "Quarantine the Past : The Greatest Hits 1989-1999", "Watery, Domestic", and "Wowee Zowee". The price on them will be reasonable, especially considering Matadors usual pricing because they are pressed on 120 gram vinyl. I'll bet that they'll be just fine.
Here's a list of things to look for this coming week. The Besnard Lakes lp "The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night', "Broken Side of Town" from Alberta Cross on 180 gram, a self-titled lp by Broken Bells, "American VI : Ain't No Grave" from Johnny Cash, Jason Coulett's "Rat A Tat Tat", "I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone" from Crime in Stereo, Dark Tranquility's double lp " We Are the Void", "Islands" by The Mary Onettes, "The Winter of Mixed Drinks" from Frightened Rabbit and a new lp by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists titled "The Brutalists Bricks". The strangest thing out this week is an affordable, non Best Buy exclusive, version of Guns N' Roses "Chinese Democracy". Does anybody left care? The new releases for March 2 are as follows. a new Jamie Cullum double lp called "The Pursuit", "Permalight" from Rogue Wave, "Hologram Jams" by Jaguar Love, The Library is on Fire's "Magic Windows, Magic Nights", Shooter Jennings and Hierophant's "Black Ribbons", "Gray Waves" by Twin Tigers,"Everyday Balloons" from A Weather, "Fight Softly" by The Ruby Suns, These New Puritans's "Hidden", A double from Owen Pallett called "Heartland", Golden Triangle's "Double Jointer', "Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter Three" from Prince Far 1 and lastly, A various artists collection titled promisingly "Afro Rock Vol. 1". Kind of a short list for this coming week. Highlights from last week have turned out to be "The Mollusk" from Ween and the new Joanna Newsom titled "Have One On Me" with it's nice packaging. Still strong are the Yeasayer's "Odd Blood", "Transference" from Spoon and the new Vampire Weekend lp "Contra". Next week......... |
